Govt introduces bill to modernise bank records law

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 in Lok Sabha. This proposed legislation aims to update evidence rules for modern digital banking practices. It will replace the outdated Bankers' Books Evidence Act from 1891. The bill expands the definition of bankers' books to include all record formats. This future-ready framework will recognize electronic records and empower the central government.
