Formal retail credit access doubles over past decade
India’s formal retail credit market has expanded sharply over the past decade, with credit access rising from 35% of consumers in 2017 to 74% in 2026, according to TransUnion CIBIL. Consumption-led loans such as personal loans, credit cards and consumer durable loans have driven growth, shifting borrowing from asset purchases to lifestyle spending.
